No. 7 Lewis men's volleyball (25-6) plays at No. 10 Ohio State (21-8) on Saturday (April 28) in the 2012 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Championship. LAST TIME OUT - Lewis defeated Loyola 3-0 on Wednesday to advance to the MIVA Championship. It was Lewis' first win in the MIVA Semifinals after four straight losses in the semifinals.
AGAINST THE BUCKEYES - Lewis and Ohio State split the two meetings this season. Lewis won a 3-1 decision on Feb. 23 at Neil Carey Arena.
Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) hit .425 with 23 kills in the match. Lewis out-blocked Ohio State 12.5 to 5.5. The Buckeyes responded with a sweep of Lewis on March 31 in Columbus. 2012 MIVA Player of the Year Shawn Sangrey recorded 17 kills in the Ohio State victory.
REGULAR SEASON TITLE - The Flyers earned a share of the regular season MIVA title this year for the first time since 1998.
IT'S ALL IN THE FLICK OF THE WRIST - Not only is senior
Aaron Flick (North Ridgeville, Ohio/St. Edward) recording a career high hitting percentage but his .513 mark is also leading the MIVA. Flick's hitting percentage, if the season ended today, would stand as the highest single season total in school history. The current single-season best total is .493 (287-51-479) by Paul Aviles in 2000.
HOME SWEET HOME - Thanks to Lewis' win over Loyola on Wednesday, Lewis will finish the 2012 season with a perfect 16-0 home record.
BOLDOG DISHIN' - Lewis setter
BJ Boldog (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) went over the 1,000 assist mark this year in last week's game against Quincy. He has 1,049 assists this season. He recorded 1,104 in his freshman season in 2011.
NATIONAL HONORS -
BJ Boldog (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) and
Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) were named to the AVCA All-America Second Team on Thursday. It's the first All-America honor for both Flyers.
THE TRIFECTA - Lewis has wins over Penn State, Hawaii and Pepperdine this season. The last time Lewis defeated Penn State and two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) schools was 2000 when the Flyers topped Stanford, San Diego State and Cal. State Northridge in addition to Penn State.
EIGHT IS GREAT - Eight Flyers have earned MIVA Offensive or Defensive Player of the Week honors this season.
Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) leads the Flyers with three Offensive Player of the Week Awards this year.
A WIN... - A win on Saturday would be Lewis' first MIVA Championship and NCAA berth since 2004.
HEY THEY'VE HAD FIVE YEARS - Lewis fifth-year senior middle blockers
Aaron Flick (North Ridgeville, Ohio/St. Edward) and
Matt Gallik (Evergreen Park, Ill./Brother Rice) rank among the best blockers in school history. Flick is tied for all-time in block assists (305) and ranks sixth in total blocks (338). Gallik ranks fifth in block assists (303) and fifth in total blocks (343).
