No. 13 Lewis Men’s Volleyball Swept By No. 2 Brigham Young, 3-0

Provo, Utah – The No. 13 Lewis University men's volleyball team was unable to slow down the No. 2 Brigham Young Cougars on Saturday (Jan. 12), falling 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-14) at Smith Fieldhouse.
 
The Flyers fall to 1-4 on the season while the Cougars improve to 3-1.
 
“We weren't able to recreate the intensity from last nights win,” Lewis head men's volleyball coach Dan Friend said. “BYU came out hungry and raised their level of play.”
 
In the first set, the squads exchanged six ties before BYU was able to put some space in the score. The Cougars were up four points at 23-19, when the Flyers were able to capitalize on two BYU attack errors and a kill from Geoff Powell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) to get within one. After a BYU timeout, the Cougars were able to win the set, 25-22 on a kill from Josue Rivera and a Lewis attack error.
 
After a kill from redshirt senior Jay Petty (Downer's Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) to start the second set, BYU picked up steam going up two points quickly at 5-3, on three kills by Rivera, a kill from Ben Patch and a Lewis error. The Cougars were able to extend their lead to seven, at 17-10, and carried their momentum to a 25-16 victory to go up two sets.
 
Lewis knotted up BYU at 8-all with a kill from Eric Fitterer (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) but the Flyers were unable to slow down the Cougars offense in the third set. BYU put together a 6-0 run to go up seven, at 17-10, getting three kills from Taylor Sander, a kill from Devin Young and an attack error by Lewis. The Cougars closed out the set on an 8-4 run to win the set 25-14 and the match, 3-0.
 
Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) led the Flyers with 10 kills on 23 attempts while junior Yiwei Zhou (Nanjing, China/Nanjing No. 1) hit .807 with five kills on six attempts and two block assists. Setter BJ Boldog (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) had 26 of the Flyers 27 assists.
 
Lewis next heads to University Park, Penn., to take on No. 7 Penn State in non-conference play on Friday (Jan. 18). First serve is set for 7 PM ET.
