Romeoville, Ill. – The No. 15 Lewis University men's volleyball team opened their 2013 home schedule with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-23) victory over NJIT on Friday (Jan. 25) at Neil Carey Arena.
The Flyers improve to 3-5 on the season while the Highlanders fall to 1-3 on the year.
“The guys were excited about playing at home and came out fired up,” Lewis head men's volleyball coach
Dan Friend said. “In the first two games, we did a good job of taking care of the ball on both sides of the floor.”

Geoff Powell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) (Claremont, Calif./Claremont), the only player in the match to reach double-figures, led the Flyers with 11 kills and five digs.
In the first set, the Flyers hit .522 executing 14 kills on 23 total attempts. Redshirt senior
Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) earned four of his eight kills and three block assists in the set as the Flyers took the game, 25-16.
Lewis carried their momentum into the second set and quickly took control of the game. Powell earned five of his 11 kills of the match in this set to hit .625 and was credited with a service ace to lead the squad to capture the set, 25-14.
Between the second and third sets, the Flyers honored the 2012 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Championship team.
To start the third set, the squads exchanged 10 tie-ups. NJIT then took their first lead of the night, as they went on a seven-point swing to go up 17-10. The Flyers then went on a 11-5 run to tie the set at 21-all, getting two kills from Powell, a kill each from Petty,
Yiwei Zhou (Nanjing, China/Nanjing No. 1) (Nanjing, China/Nanjing No. 1) and
Eric Fitterer (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) as well as block assists from Powell, Zhou and
BJ Boldog (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) (Palatine, Ill./Palatine).
Two kills from Powell tied the set at 22 and 23-all, while a kill from Zhou allowed Lewis to take a 24-23 lead. The Flyers wrapped up the game, 25-23, on an NJIT attack error.
Boldog collected 30 assists and four block assists, while Zhou added four block assists and five kills in the win.
Lewis returns to action Saturday (Jan. 26) when the squad hosts George Mason on Hawaiian Night. First serve is set for 7 PM.
