Lewis Women’s Volleyball Suffers 3-2 Loss To Northwood At GLIAC/GLVC Crossover

Kim Vertin posted a career-high 24 kills and 10 digs in the contest.

Aurora, Ill. – Lewis University redshirt junior outside hitter Kim Vertin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central) collected her fourth double-double of the season with a career-high 24 kills and 10 digs in the women's volleyball team's 3-2 (25-27, 25-22, 19-25, 25-23, 15-12) loss to Northwood on Friday (Oct. 25) as part of the 2013 GLIAC/GLVC Crossover at the Great Lakes Center.
 
The Flyers fall to 15-6 on the year while the Timberwolves improve to 14-6.
 
Lewis junior setter Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) dished out 54 assists and had 12 digs while redshirt sophomore right side hitter Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) posted 18 kills, seven digs, a solo block and a block assist. Freshman libero Carolyn Nojiri (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) picked up 13 digs while fellow freshman right side hitter Maddie Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) collected 10 digs and two service aces. Sophomore middle hitter Morgan Cebula (Stevens Point, Wis./Stevens Point Area) collected three solo blocks, four block assists and eight kills.
 
For the contest, the Flyers outhit the Timberwolves, .267 (67 K, 21 E, 172 TA) to .191 (62 K, 29 E, 173 TA). Lewis also collected 10 team blocks to Northwood's 3.5.
 
"Matches where your team outscores and outperforms the opponent are sometimes the toughest ones to lose," Lewis head women's volleyball coach Lorelee Smith said. "It results in not playing consistently up to the necessary level.
 
"As a team, I believe we are better than what we showed today."
 
In the first set, the Flyers were able to battle back from a seven point deficit at 12-5, to take the set 27-25. Davito collected five kills in the set to pace the Flyers offense.
 
Northwood picked up the second set to even the score at one apiece. Lewis hit .342 (15 K, 2 E, 38 TA) while Vertin picked up six kills, but they gave up five service aces to the Timberwolves.
 
The Flyers held the Timberwolves to a .028 hitting percentage (9 K, 8 E, 36 TA) as they maintained a lead the whole third set. Lewis only committed three attacking errors, hitting .286 with 13 kills in 35 attempts.
 
Northwood was able to steal the fourth set and carried the momentum in to the fifth. The Timberwolves opened the final frame on a 9-1 run before the Flyers were able to get within 11-10 on a block assists by Davito and Cebula. Northwood closed out the set on a 4-2 run with three kills from Juliia Pakhomenko and a Lewis error to take the set.
 
Northwood's offense was led by Pakhomenko's 30 kills, five aces, and 17 digs. Krysta Kramer added 11 kills and 19 digs while setter Jordan Dunn collected 52 assists.
 
The Flyers return to the Great Lakes Center for two more matches in the GLIAC/GLVC Crossover on Saturday (Oct. 26). Lewis will battle Hillsdale at 10 AM, before closing out the day in a 4 PM contest against No. 22 Ferris State.
