The beat goes on for the No. 8 Lewis University men's soccer team, as they scored two first-half goals on their way to the 2-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over McKendree - extending their unbeaten streak to 10 games - at Leemon Field on Sunday (Oct. 6) afternoon.

With the win, Lewis improves to 7-0-3 overall and 6-0-2 in GLVC action, while the host Bearcats fall to 2-7-1 on the campaign and 0-7-1 in conference play. The Flyers are on a nine-game GLVC road unbeaten streak and have not been felled by a conference foe since a 3-2 overtime loss at the hands of Southern Indiana on September 23, 2012.

Lewis senior forward Cristhian Ramirez (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) led the way for the Flyers with a goal and an assist, while freshman midfielder Ivan Surlina (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) scored his second goal in the last three games. Both of those scores came less than a minute of each other, as Ramirez scored at the 13:25 mark, while Surlina found the back of the net at the 14:22 mark.

The score would remain that way until the 52nd minute, as McKendree defender Cassidy Connor beat Lewis goalkeeper Alec Pickett (Mokena, Ill./Providence ) to cut the Flyers' lead in half at 2-1.

Pickett, who saw his scoreless streak end at 507:45, made four saves in goal, while his counterpart Matt Derrington allowed the only two shots he faced for goals.

As a team, McKendree outshot the Flyers, 21-9 and held a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal.

"I'm proud of the guys, because it's not easy to get results on the road," Lewis head men's soccer coach Evan Fiffles said. "Especially after a playing a double overtime game (on Friday night), traveling four hours on a bus and playing the next day.

"They did what they had to do (today)," Fiffles continued. "We scored two with the wind today and held on for the win.

"McKendree is a nice team and they gave us all we could handle."

Lewis returns to action on Friday (Oct. 11), as the Flyers welcome Southern Indiana to Lewis Stadium for a 7:30 PM kickoff.
