Springfield, Mo. – The Lewis University women's volleyball team dug deep for their fourth-straight win after dropping the first set to Drury, picking up the 3-1 (23-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-18) victory on Sunday (Nov. 10) at the O'Reilly Family Event Center.
The win marks the Flyers' and Lewis head women's volleyball coach
Lorelee Smith's seventh straight 20-win season (20-8). Lewis improves to 13-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action. The Panthers fall to 13-15 on the year and to 6-9 in league play.
Lewis sophomore middle hitter
Morgan Cebula (Stevens Point, Wis./Stevens Point Area) led the team with a career-high 16 kills and five total blocks. Redshirt sophomore right side hitter
Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) collected 10 kills and two block assists for the Flyers, while junior setter
Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) had 41 assists and 13 digs. Redshirt freshman libero
Nicole Yuede (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) had 21 digs, while freshman
Carolyn Nojiri (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) collected 12 digs.
"Today was a bit of a struggle for us at the start," Smith said. "It's great to have a team that wants to win over their own individual success.
"I couldn't ask for more fight in a team."
In the first set the Panthers took control, breaking a 15-all tie and taking the lead on three-straight Lewis attack errors. The Flyers got within one at 24-23 on a kill from Davito, but the Panthers came out of a timeout with a kill for the set win.
The Flyers shook off the rust in the second set, as Cebula collected five kills and two block assists to tie the match at a set apiece.
The squads exchanged five ties before Lewis was able to grab ahold of the lead and the third set. Cebula and sophomore outside hitter
Lauren O'Brien (Verona, Wis./Verona Area) both collected four kills, while Barea had two service aces in the set for the Flyers.
The Flyers heated up to swing .314 (14 K, 3 E, 35 TA) in the fourth set win while holding the Panthers to a .024 hitting percentage (11 K, 10 E, 41 TA). Sophomore outside hitter
Cassidy Parsons (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial), Cebula and Davito each collected four kills to help the Flyers clinch the match.
Laynie Timmons and Sara Borneman both tallied 10 kills for the Panthers' offense. Drury's libero Bridget Justis collected a floor-high 28 digs while setter Brooke Antenen had 30 assists and 14 digs.
Lewis closes out the 2013 home slate on Tuesday (Nov. 12) when they host UW-Parkside at 7 PM at Neil Carey Arena. Redshirt senior setter
