Zsofia Lanstiak (Budapest, Hungary/Karinthy Frigyes Gimnazium) (Budapest, Hungary/Karinthy Frigyes Gimnazium) and
Zsofia Kranczicki (Eger, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Gimnazium es Kollegium) (Eger, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Gimnazium es Kollegium) each won two matches to lift the No. 34 Flyers to the 6-3 regional victory in their spring opener over Michigan Tech at Challenge Fitness on Friday (Feb. 22) afternoon.
"We were a little rusty, but we battled in every match," Lewis head women's tennis coach
Brett Bridel said. "It's always nice to start off with a 'W' against a good team."
With the win, Lewis is now 1-0, while the visiting Huskies fall to 7-11.
Lanstiak and Kranczicki teamed up at No. 1 doubles for the 8-2 victory over Michigan Tech's Natalia Lebedeva and Dunja Imran Al-Sous. Lanstiak also earned the 6-3, 7-5 win over Lebedeva at No. 1 singles, while Kranczicki claimed the 1-6, 6-0, 6-3 come-from-behind win over Kwang Suthijindawong at No. 2 singles.
The Flyers also earned singles victories at both No. 3 singles and No. 5 singles. Freshman
Megan Nguyen (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora) (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora) cruised to the 6-1, 6-0 win over Kira Eck at No. 3 singles, while sophomore
Brianna Markgraf (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) (Rockford, Ill./Boylan Catholic) picked up the 6-3, 6-2 win over Chelsea Uganski at No. 5 singles.
The final Lewis victory came at No. 3 doubles, as junior
Kendra Mills (Elmhurst, Ill./York) (Elmhurst, Ill./York) and freshman
Jill Wetmore (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa) (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa) paired up for the 9-7 win over Erika Tenizbaeva and Uganski.
Lewis returns to action on Thursday (Feb. 28), as the Flyers take on Lake Superior State for an in-region match-up. First serve is set for 12:30 PM at Challenge Fitness in Lockport, Ill.
