Lockport, Ill. - The No. 33 Lewis University men's tennis team did not waste any time in their spring opener against Michigan Tech on Friday (Feb. 22) night, as the Flyers swept all three doubles matches over the Huskies, claiming the 6-3 regional victory at Challenge Fitness.
"It was great to see the guys come out and play really solid doubles to get the night started," Lewis head men's tennis coach
Brett Bridel said. "It set the tone and gave us momentum heading into singles play.
"Every player battled all the way to the end of every match and that's all we ever ask."
With the win, Lewis improves to 1-0 on the season, while the Huskies are now 8-1 on the campaign.
At No. 1 doubles, Lewis sophomores
Erik Aunapuu (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese Spordigumnaasiumi) (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese Spordigumnaasiumi) and
Armand Levandi (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese Spordigumnaasiumi) (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese Spordigumnaasiumi) teamed up for the 8-1 win over Michigan Tech's Pedro Rodriguez and Felipe dos Santos. Aunapuu also defeated dos Santos, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, while Levandi claimed the 6-2, 6-3 victory over Javier Oliveros at No. 2 singles.
At No. 3 singles, sophomore
Florian Etienne (Paris, France/Jean de la Fontaine) (Paris, France/Jean de la Fontaine/Shorter) claimed the 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 come-from-behind win over Built Yumuang. He also paired up with junior
Philip Kuenzi (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli/Creighton) for the 8-5 triump over Andrew Kremkow and Jimmy Konarske at No. 3 doubles.
The Flyers picked up their final victory at No. 2 singles, where senior
Jesse Hardacre (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) and sophomore
John Richert (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) earned the 8-2 win over Oliveros and Yumuang.
Lewis returns to action on Thursday (Feb. 28), as the Flyers welcome Lake Superior State for a 9 PM showdown at Challenge Fitness.
