No. 12 Lewis Men’s Volleyball Out Blocks IPFW In Sweep

Three Flyers record double-figure kills in the win.

The Flyers earned 12 team blocks to the Mastodons' three on Saturday.

Romeoville, Ill. – The No. 12 Lewis University men's volleyball team swept their fourth Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association opponent of the season on Saturday (Feb. 23), defeating IPFW 3-0, (25-20, 25-15, 28-26) at Neil Carey Arena.
 
The Flyers improve to 11-5 on the year and stay undefeated in the MIVA play at 7-0. The Mastodons fall to 6-5 on the season and 3-3 in conference action.
 
“Our guys did a great job putting themselves in position to get good touches,” Lewis head men's volleyball coach Dan Friend said. “They were also able to finish on blocks in some key moments.”
 
The Flyers tallied 12 total team blocks while holding the Mastodons to three team blocks.
 
Redshirt senior outside hitter Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) led all players with 13 kills, while tallying four total blocks, three digs and two aces. Freshman middle hitter Bobby Walsh (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) hit .733, earning 11 kills on 15 attempts and no errors as well as recording a match-high seven total blocks. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Geoff Powell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) recorded 10 kills and four block assists.
 
In the first set Lewis held IPFW to a .028 hitting percentage (11 kills, 10 errors, 36 attempts) and earned 5.5 total team blocks. Walsh led the Flyers with four kills and four block assists in the 25-20 set victory.
 
Lewis jumped out to a quick 4-2 lead in the second set, getting a kill from sophomore opposite Eric Fitterer (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) and capitalizing on three IPFW attack errors. IPFW got within one point five different times, the last at 15-14, but Lewis was able to go on a 10-1 run to close out the set, 25-15. Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) had two aces and a kill during the run while the front line of Powell, Walsh and Greg Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) earned back-to-back block assists to close out the set.
 
In the third set the Flyers again jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead on the Mastodons. Lewis had Powell, Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) and Greg Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) all earn kills while the squad capitalized on four IPFW errors. The Mastodons used back-to-back mini runs late to tie the set at 22-all. Neither squad could put two points together until Lewis got a kill from Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) and an IPFW error to take the third set 28-26.
 
Eddie Rivera led IPFW with nine kills, nine digs and two block assists.
 
The Flyers return to action in a non-conference bout with Division III Carthage College on Tuesday (Feb. 26) at Neil Carey Arena. First serve on Retro Night is set for 7 PM.
