Romeoville, Ill. – The No. 14 Lewis University men's volleyball team extended their winning streak to seven matches with a straight set sweep of Quincy (25-14, 25-14, 25-21) in Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association action on Saturday (Feb. 9) at Neil Carey Arena.
The Flyers improve to 8-5 on the year and 4-0 in MIVA play while Quincy falls to 4-7 on the season and 0-4 in the league.
“We came out again tonight putting a lot of serving pressure on Quincy,” Lewis head men's volleyball coach
Dan Friend said. “We were also able to put ourselves in position to play some great block defense.”
The Flyers registered 10.5 blocks in the match, led by freshman middle hitter
Bobby Walsh (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) (Chichago, Ill./Mount Carmel) who tallied one solo block and six block assists. Sophomore opposite
Eric Fitterer (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) posted a match-high 12 kills, two aces and two block assists while redshirt junior setter
BJ Boldog (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) had 26 assists, four digs, two kills and two block assists in the contest.
The Flyers came out hot from the first serve, hitting .500 (12 kills, 3 errors, 18 total attempts) in the first set while holding the Eagles to .000 (7 kills, 7 errors, 22 total attempts). Redshirt senior outside hitter
Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) paced Lewis with a set-high three kills, two service aces and a block assist.
In the second set, the squads were knotted up twice before the Flyers were able to grab the lead. A kill from junior middle hitter
Yiwei Zhou (Nanjing, China/Nanjing No. 1) (Nanjing, China/Nanjing No. 1) sparked Lewis' offense and broke the 5-all tie. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter
Geoff Powell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) closed out Lewis' 19-9 run at the service line with an ace. The Flyers also got kills from Fitterer and Walsh and a Walsh-Petty block assist.
Fitter led Lewis' offense late in the third set, picking up four kills and two block assists in the 25-21 set win.
Lewis honored Marine Corporal George Trikolas, who did two tours in Afghanistan, prior to the start of the match on Military Appreciation Night.
The Flyers next host their Alumni Match on Friday (Feb. 15) at Neil Carey Arena before heading into Chicago to take on Loyola on Saturday (Feb. 16). First serve is set for 7 PM.
