St. Louis, Mo. – Despite two solid pitching performances, the Lewis University baseball team split their Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader against Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday (March 16), dropping game one, 3-2, while bouncing back to win the second game, 1-0.
The Flyers improve to 7-3 on the season and 1-1 in conference action while the Tritons fall to 4-6 on the year, 1-1 in GLVC play.
“Both Tom and Matt were outstanding for us on the mound today,” Lewis head baseball coach
Tim McDonough said. “Tom deserved the win in game one, but we didn't hit well.”
In the first game, UMSL got on the scoreboard first in the top of the fourth, getting a lead off double to score two batters later. Lewis answered in the bottom half of the inning with a run on two errors. Junior

Jake Murray (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) on a sacrifice fly for the Flyers first run of the game.
The Tritons picked up another run in the top of the fifth, connecting three two-out hits to take the lead. After senior
Brian Norwood (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) got hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, fellow senior
Ian O'Connor (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) singled him to third base. Norwood then scored on sophomore
Mike Barajas (Chicago, Ill./Nazareth)' hit out in front of home plate.
UMSL scratched across the winning run in the top of the sixth inning. The Tritons took advantage of a hit batter, two hits and a sacrifice to take the game 3-2.
Junior pitcher
Tom Helwich (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) (2-1) took the loss throwing a nine inning complete game for the Flyers. He gave up seven hits, allowed three runs, struck out six, walked one and hit one UMSL batter.
UMSL's Nolan Clayton (3-1) picked up the win with seven innings of work. He allowed two Flyer runs, one earned, while striking out six, walking one and hitting one Flyer batter. Kyle Renaud picked up his fourth save of the season, throwing two innings. He struck out one, walked one and hit one batter.
In the nightcap, Lewis senior pitcher
Matt Frahm (McLean, Ill./Olympia) (2-0) threw a seven inning, complete game for his second victory of the season. He scattered two hits and two walks while striking out three UMSL batters.
In the bottom of the third inning, after sophomore
Anthony Baldassano (Woodridge, Ill./Nazareth) drew a lead off walk. Barajas sacrificed bunted him to second on a grounder in front of the mound. In the next at-bat, Baldassano scored the only run of the game on junior
Drew Buddle (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin)'s single up the middle.
UMSL's Andy Flett (0-2) took the loss, giving up one run on three hits. He also walked and struck out two Flyer batters.
The Sunday (March 17) conference doubleheader at UMSL Baseball Field was canceled due to inclement weather in the St. Louis area.
The Flyers return to Brennan Field to host Illinois-Springfield for a four-game GLVC series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday (March 23) at 12 PM.
