No. 10 Lewis Men’s Volleyball Upsets No. 7 Ohio State In Three Set Win

Redshirt sophomore Geoff Powell led the Flyers with 15 kills and career-high 11 digs.

Columbus, Ohio – The No. 10 Lewis University men's volleyball team stayed undefeated in Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association play with a three-set sweep (25-13, 25-20, 25-23) of No. 7 Ohio State on Saturday (March 2) at St. John Arena.
 
Lewis improves to 12-5 on the year and 8-0 MIVA action. Ohio State falls to 12-3 on the season and 5-1 in conference play.
 
“It was awesome to get a big conference road win over a nationally-ranked team in Ohio State,” Lewis head men's volleyball coach Dan Friend said. “We executed our game plan and worked hard to put triple blocks up against their attacks.”
 
Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Geoff Powell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) led the Flyers with 15 kills and tallied a career-high 11 digs. Junior middle hitter Yiwei Zhou (Nanjing, China/Nanjing No. 1) led Lewis' block defense with six total blocks, including two solo blocks, and five kills. Redshirt junior setter BJ Boldog (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) had 37 assists and five total blocks for the Flyers.
 
In the first set, the Flyers' seven team blocks and .480 hitting percentage with 14 kills and two errors on 25 attempts were key in cruising to a 25-13 set victory over the Buckeyes. Powell led the Flyers with six kills while freshman middle hitter Bobby Walsh (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) and Boldog each had three block assists in the set.
 
The Flyers kept their momentum rolling in the second set, jumping out to a 10-4 lead. Powell, Zhou and Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) each earned kills while Walsh tallied a solo block as the Flyers capitalized on five unforced Buckeye errors. Ohio State got within four-points at 24-20 on a Flyer attack error but Powell was able to come back and get the kill for the Flyers to take the set 25-20.
 
The third set was tighter as Ohio State took a three-point lead at 16-13. Lewis used a pair of three-point runs to recapture the lead, 24-23. Boldog got a big solo block for the Flyers to take the set, 25-23.
 
Andrew Lutz led the Ohio State offense with 10 kills and seven digs.

Lewis stays on the road, heading Fairfax, Va., to take on George Mason on Wednesday (March 6) at 7 PM ET.
