Quincy, Ill. – Sophomore opposite
Eric Fitterer (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) posted a match-high 15 kills as the No. 7 Lewis University men's volleyball team defeated Quincy 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-20) in Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association action on Saturday (March 23) at Pepsi Arena.
The Flyers improve to 17-7 on the season and 9-2 in MIVA play while the Hawks fall to 9-15 on the year and 0-9 in conference action.
Redshirt sophomore outside hitter
Geoff Powell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) registered his third double-double of the season with 13 kills and 10 digs as well as two total blocks for Lewis. Redshirt junior setter
BJ Boldog (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) earned 37 assists, six digs and two block assists. Freshman middle hitter
Bobby Walsh (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) earned six kills and led the Flyers with six block assists.
In the first set, the Flyers used a six-point run to take an 11-6 lead on the Hawks. Fitterer picked up two kills and a solo block while Walsh and redshirt senior outside hitter
Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) teamed up for a block. Quincy committed two attack errors as well. The Hawks put together two mini runs but the Flyers were able to hold on to their lead for the set win.
The Flyers held the Hawks to a hitting percentage of .059 (10 kills, 8 errors, 34 attempts) in the second set victory. Powell paced Lewis with five of his 13 kills in the game as he also picked up 1.5 of the team's four total blocks.
In the third set, Quincy took a brief lead at 7-5 on a four-point run on two kills by Jack Gamache, a block by John Pranger and a Lewis attack error. The Flyers quickly regained the lead at 10-8, as Fitterer earned four kills as well as a kill from Petty during the run. Lewis used a 7-1 run to take a commanding lead at 22-15. Junior middle hitter
Yiwei Zhou (Nanjing, China/Nanjing No. 1) (Nanjing, China/Nanjing No. 1) and Fitterer each picked up two kills as the Flyers capitalized on three Hawks errors. Walsh and Boldog captured the match victory when they teamed up for a block.
Gamache led the Hawks with 11 kills while Chris Lynch earned 29 assists.
Lewis returns to Neil Carey Arena to host Lees McRae on Thursday (March 28). First serve on High School Night is set for 7 PM.
