Louisville, Ky. – Lewis University starting pitchers Tom Helwich (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) and Matt Frahm (McLean, Ill./Olympia) (McLean, Ill./Olympia) went the distance as the No. 17 Flyers swept Bellarmine 11-1, 5-3 on Saturday (April 6) at Knights Field in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

The Flyers, now on a 12-game winning streak, move to 18-3 on the year and 12-1 in GLVC play. The Knights fall to 14-11 on the season and 9-5 against conference opponents.

“It was a pitcher's duel for the first seven innings of the first game,” Lewis head baseball coach Tim McDonough. “We were able to break through and get a couple of hits late to give Tom (Helwich) a cushion, as he pitched unbelievably well today.”

In game one, Helwich (5-1) tossed nine innings, gave up one unearned run on nine hits, walked one and struck out five.

Sophomore Anthony Baldassano (Woodridge, Ill./Nazareth) (Woodridge, Ill./Nazareth) led the Flyers offense with three hits, including a double while senior Brian Norwood (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) and junior Drew Buddle (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) each collected two hits. Buddle also picked up three RBI.

The Flyers broke a 1-all tie in the sixth inning, getting two runs on two hits and three Knights' errors. Lewis tacked on four runs on three hits and one Bellarmine error in the eighth and four more runs in the ninth on four hits and one Bellarmine error.

“The second game was a grinder,” McDonough said. “Matt (Frahm) got stronger as the game went on and closed it out for us.”

In game two of the twin bill, Frahm (3-0) threw seven innings, giving up three runs, one earned, on nine hits and struck out three.

Junior Kyle Kapka (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) hit his seventh double of the season to get on base with two outs in the fifth. Redshirt junior Kyle Thomas (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic) singled Kapka in to take a 4-3 lead.

Flyers tacked on an insurance run in the seventh inning when junior Ben Albano (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) singled to get on and advanced to third on a Bellarmine error before scoring on a wild pitch.

Kapka, junior Alex Slaby (Davenport, Iowa/Davenport West) (Davenport, Iowa/Davenport West/Blackhawk College) and sophomore Mike Barajas (Chicago, Ill./Nazareth) (Chicago, Ill./Nazareth) all collected two hits in the win while Thomas picked up two RBI.

The Flyers and the Knights return to Knights Field for a doubleheader on Sunday (April 7) with first pitch at 12 PM.
