Evansville Ind. – Behind a complete-game shutout from Lewis University junior starting pitcher Tom Helwich (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central), the Flyers baseball team defeated Quincy University 1-0 in the first round of the 2013 Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.

Junior Kyle Kapka (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) got the ninth inning started with a single through the left side of the infield, before sophomore J.C. Burrell (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) pinch ran for him. Senior Brian Norwood (Medinah, Ill./Lake Park) reached base on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to second when Quincy's pitcher Clayton Hicks over threw his first baseman.

With runners at second and third, Quincy intentionally walked sophomore Anthony Baldassano (Woodridge, Ill./Nazareth) to load the bases. On the fourth ball, Quincy's Hicks over threw his catcher, allowing Burrell to score the game-winning run.

“What can you say about a 1-0 game in the tournament?” Lewis head baseball coach Tim McDonough said. “It was a great effort by both teams and both pitchers."

“It was a great college baseball game,” McDonough continued. “We were fortunate enough to come out on the winning side.”

Helwich (10-2) scattered five hits over nine innings, while striking out seven and walking one.

Quincy's Hicks (4-4) picked up the loss, giving up one unearned run on four hits over eight innings. He also walked and struck out four batters.

The No. 2 seed Flyers (30-14) move on to face the No. 6 seed Bellarmine at 11 AM on Friday (May 10) at USI Field. Bellarmine defeated Missouri-St. Louis, 5-2, to advance.
