Lewis Women’s Volleyball Upsets No. 14 Truman State, 3-1

Kim Vertin, Alexis Davito and Cassidy Parsons all had double-figure kills

Three Flyers had double-figure kills in their 3-1 on Saturday.

Romeoville, Ill. – Lewis University redshirt junior outside hitter Kim Vertin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central) picked up her second double-double of the season in the women's volleyball 3-1 (20-25, 25-18, 26-24, 25-21) victory over No. 14 Truman State to open Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Saturday (Sept. 21) at Neil Carey Arena.
 
Vertin had 17 digs, 16 kills, two solo blocks and two block assists in the contest. Redshirt sophomore right side hitter Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) had 15 kills, and two total blocks while sophomore outside hitter Cassidy Parsons (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) collected 11 putaways. Junior setter Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) had 42 assists, three kills, and three block assists while redshirt freshman libero Nicole Yuede (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) had 14 digs.
 
The Flyers improve to 5-4 on the season and 1-0 in GLVC action while Truman State moves to 5-4 on the campaign and 0-1 in the league.
 
"The team steadily got better and better tonight," Lewis head women's volleyball coach Lorelee Smith said. "They held their composure which is really great growth for such a young team.
 
"They believed from start to finish and never quit."
 
In the first set, the Bulldogs grabbed the momentum at 16-10. Despite the Flyers' late five-point run capitalizing on five Bulldog errors, Truman State took the set, 25-20.
 
Lewis took control in the second set at 14-8 on a Truman State service error. Vertin picked up five kills in the set as Cebula collected two solo blocks and thee block assists to help keep Flyers with the upper hand. Lewis tied the match at one set each with a 25-18 set win. 
 
The Bulldogs kept up the tough pressure on the Flyer's in the third set. The squads exchanged 13 ties, including 24-24 before Lewis was able to take the set 26-24 on a kill by Barea and a Bulldog error. Vertin and Davito both picked up five kills for the Flyers.
 
In the fourth set Lewis took a quick 5-3 lead on three kills by Parsons and two putaways from Davito. The squads exchanged 10 ties before Lewis was able to gain the momentum to carry them to the 25-21 set victory.
 
Truman State's offense was lead by Abby Heise's 14 kills, while Ali Patterson picked up 13 putaways. Emilee Walters added 10 kills of her own as setter Meghan Zimmerman had a floor-high 44 assists.
 
Lewis continues GLVC action on Sunday (Sept. 22) when Quincy comes to Neil Carey Arena. First serve is set for 1 PM.
