Emma O'Neill (Papillion, Neb./Papillion La Vista South) and junior
Sarah Newberry (Fairfield, Ohio/Stephen T Badin) were each tabbed to the All-GLVC Second Team, the league office announced Thursday night.
The team leader in solo blocks with 26, O'Neill ended the year with 117.0 total blocks, 296 total points and a career-high 227 kills across 106 sets. The Papillion, Neb., native amassed five-or-more total blocks on 11 occasions, underscored by eight block performances at Embry-Riddle (Sept.20) and against Southwest Baptist (Nov. 15) on senior day. She also tallied a career-high 16 kills against Embry-Riddle as well. One of four players to appear in all 28 games, O'Neill hit at a season-best .560 (15-1-25, min. 10 attempts) against Upper Iowa (Oct. 4), one of two times this year the senior hit above .500. O'Neill currently ranks 11th all-time for total blocks with 248 as well.
The only player to start all 28 matches, Newberry ended the year with 227 kills, 14 service aces and a team-best 117 total blocks. The Fairfield, Ohio, native tallied nine blocks against McKendree on Halloween, the most amount of blocks for any player in a single match this year. Newberry put down 10-or-more kills on 11 occasions, highlighted by her 16 kill performance against Francis Marion (Sept. 6). The junior middle hitter amassed three solo blocks against both McKendree and Regis (Sept. 13). Her 14 service aces ranked fourth on the squad this year while her 227 kills were tied with O'Neill for the third most this year.
The Flyers are back in action tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. against UMSL in the first round of the GLVC Women's Volleyball Championship.
