Lewis Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Maryville, 3-0

St. Louis, Mo. – Lewis University freshman right side hitter Maddie Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) posted a season-high .588 hitting percentage with 10 kills and no errors in 17 attempts in the women's volleyball team's 3-0 (25-22, 27-25, 25-19) sweep of Maryville on Saturday (Sept. 28).
 
The Flyers stay unbeaten in Great Lakes Valley Conference action at 3-0 and improve to 7-4 on the season. The Saints fall to 0-4 in league play and 5-9 on the year.
 
All three of the Flyers setters picked up double figures in assists. Junior Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) picked up 13 helpers while senior Vivian Pritz (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Township) and freshman Abby Biggs (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) both collected 12 assists. Sophomore outside hitter/libero Cassidy Parsons (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) had 11 digs as redshirt freshman middle hitter Alesia Kroeker (Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn) led the way with four block assists.
 
"Maryville pushed us and we had some young players step up," Lewis head women's volleyball coach Lorelee Smith said. "We were able to play everyone today and had a great team effort."
 
In the first set, the squads were knotted up four times before the Flyers took a five point lead at 18-13. Maryville mounted a comeback to get within one at 20-19. A kill and block assist from Kroeker, teamed up with Seliga, spurred a Flyers' 5-3 run to take the 25-22 set victory.
 
The teams battled for the upper hand in the second set. Lewis took control at 21-17 as sophomore middle hitter Morgan Cebula (Stevens Point, Wis./Stevens Point Area) and Parsons came up with the block assist. Maryville took the lead at 23-22 on kills from Demi Maniaci and Hannah Seitter and capitalizing on three Lewis errors. The squads were knotted up three more times before the Flyers scored the last two points on a Seliga kill and a Saints error for the 27-25 set win.
 
Maryville kept up the pressure on the Flyers in the third set as the team exchanged six ties before Lewis broke away. The Flyers amassed an eight-point lead at 19-11 on a five-point run. A kill and two aces from redshirt sophomore Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) and a putaway from sophomore outside hitter Lauren O'Brien (Verona, Wis./Verona Area) during the run helped Lewis cruise to a 25-19 set victory for the sweep.
 
Maryville was lead by Manaci's 11 kills while Seitter had 18 assists. Ali Lampen had a floor-high 16 digs while Taryn Trubich added 11.
 
The Flyers are back in action on Sunday (Sept. 29) when they take on Missouri-St. Louis at 1 PM.
