St. Louis, Mo. – The Lewis University women's volleyball team became the only unbeaten team in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with their 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-22) sweep of Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday (Sept. 29).
The Flyers improve to 8-4 on the year and 4-0 in GLVC playwhile the Tritons move to 8-5 on the season and 4-1 conference play.
Lewis redshirt junior outside hitter
Kim Vertin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central) posted a career-high 20 kills for the Flyers, while redshirt sophomore right side hitter
Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) picked up 12 putaways. Junior setter
Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) had a floor-high 36 assists in the three set contest. Sophomore outside hitter/libero
Cassidy Parsons (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) collected a career-high 19 digs against the Tritons.
"The team played very composed no matter the score," Lewis head volleyball coach
Lorelee Smith said. "We made some small adjustments throughout the match that helped.
"Our players that came off the bench never let up."
In the first set the Flyers were able to take a 21-14 lead after putting together a seven-point run. Parsons picked up two kills and an ace while sophomore middle hitter
Morgan Cebula (Stevens Point, Wis./Stevens Point Area) and Vertin each had one putaway. Lewis also took advantage of two UMSL errors.
The Tritons mounted a comeback to get within 23-22 but two kills from Vertin and one from Davito gave the Flyers the 25-22 set victory.
UMSL kept the pressure on Lewis in the second set, holding an early lead until the Flyers were able to tie the match at 8-8 on a kill by Davito. The squads exchanged four more ties before Lewis took control of the set on a kill by Cebula at 16-15. The Flyers closed out the 25-21 set win on a kill by freshman
Bailey Sparkman (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell).
In the third set, UMSL jumped out to a four-point lead at 8-4 and continued to hold a three-point lead most of the set. A block assist from redshirt freshman
Alesia Kroeker (Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn) and Sparkman tied the set at 20-all and spurred the Flyers to pick up the set, 25-22, for their third-straight GLVC match sweep.
Haley Brightwell led the Tritons offense with nine kills while Chelsea Burke picked up 15 digs. UMSL's setters Lindsay Meyer and Anna McNulty both had 15 assists in the match.
The Flyers return to Neil Carey arena on Friday (Oct. 4) when they host McKendree at 7 PM.
