Stanford, Calif. – The No. 8 Lewis men's volleyball team was unable to force a fifth set against No. 4 Stanford University, falling 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-19, 25-22) to the Cardinal on Friday (Jan. 10) at Maples Pavilion.
The Flyers fall to 1-2 on the campaign while the Cardinal improves 2-0 on the year.
"We didn't give the effort we needed to have throughout the match to get the win," Lewis head men's volleyball coach
Dan Friend said. "Tomorrow, we need to play with more confidence and effort to come away with an 1-1 road trip."
The Flyers were led by junior outside hitter
Greg Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North), who tallied 15 kills and two service aces, while junior opposite
Eric Fitterer (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) hit .529 with 11 kills and two errors on 17 attempts. Redshirt freshman middle blocker
Jacob Schmiegelt (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) collected six kills and three block assists while redshirt senior setter
BJ Boldog (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) dished out 35 assists and paced the Flyers with one solo block and five block assists.
In the first set, Stanford used eight service aces while hitting .474 (12 K, 3 E, 19 TA) to take the game, 25-16. Lewis was limited to nine kills in the set, as Petty led with four putaways.
Lewis rallied in the second set to swing .429, picking up 13 kills and four errors on 21 attempts. The Flyers marked a six point lead at 16-10 on a kill by Petty, as the Cardinal clawed to get back within one at 22-21. Lewis got putaways from Petty and redshirt junior outside hitter
Geoff Powell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) as well as block assists from sophomore middle blocker
Bobby Walsh (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) and Boldog to tie the match at 1-1.
In the third set, the squads knotted up the match nine times. Stanford took control of the set, and stopped the Flyers' attempts to turn the momentum. The Cardinal hit .455 with 12 kills and two errors in 22 attempts while holding the Flyers to .207 (13 K, 7 E, 29 TA) and out-blocking Lewis 4-to-1 in the set victory.
The Flyers built a 20-15 lead in the fourth set, but were unable to stop Stanford's 8-3 run to tie the set at 23-all. Four different Stanford attackers picked up a kill, as Conrad Kaminski tallied a service ace, and collected three Lewis attack errors during the run. Lewis got a kill from Petty and two Stanford attack errors but dropped the game as James Shaw collected a kill and the Flyers committed their seventh attack error of the set.
Stanford's offense was led by Steven Irvin's floor-high 20 kills and three service aces while Daniel Tublin chipped in 13 kills, four service aces and three block assists. Shaw, the Cardinal setter, tallied 44 assists and five kills while libero Grant Delgado had eight digs.
The Flyers are back in action on Saturday (Jan. 11) when they take on the University of the Pacific at Spanos Center in Stockton, Calif. First serve is set for 7 PM PT.
