No. 9 Lewis Men’s Volleyball Collects 3-1 Victory Over Mount Olive

Romeoville, Ill. – The No. 9 Lewis University men's volleyball team shook off a tough first set against Mount Olive to pick up a 3-1 (18-25, 25-12, 25-22, 25-21) victory over the Trojans on Friday (Jan. 17) at Neil Carey Arena.
 
The Flyers improve to 3-2 on the season while the Trojans move to 1-1 on the campaign.
 
Redshirt junior outside hitter Geoff Powell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) led the Flyers hitting .560 with 16 kills and two errors on 25 total attempts. He also collected five digs and a block assists.

Junior outside hitter Greg Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) tallied 12 kills, three digs and a service ace while junior opposite Eric Fitterer (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) chipped in eight putaways, five digs, a block assists and service ace. Redshirt senior setter BJ Boldog (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) dished out 37 assists and collected two solo blocks and three block assists while junior libero Lucas Yanez (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) had 10 digs.
 
The Trojans came out ready to play and took the first set, 25-18, as the Flyers hit -.160, tallying five kills with nine errors on 25 attempts. The Trojans collected 13 kills and out-blocked the Flyers 5-to-3 in the set victory.
 
Lewis came roaring back in the second set for the 25-12 win. Powell collected four of his 16 kills in the set as the Flyers hit .727 with nine kills and one error in 11 attempts.
 
The Flyers kept the momentum rolling in the third set, hitting .600 with 14 kills and two errors in 20 attempts and out-blocked the Trojans 3-to-0.
 
Lewis was able to keep Mount Olive at bay in the fourth set, as they got within one point at 20-19. The Flyers collected two kills from Powell, a service ace from Fitterer and a solo block from Boldog while collecting a Mount Olive service error to take the set 25-21 and the match.
 
"Mount Olive came in and played fearlessly tonight," Lewis head men's volleyball coach Dan Friend said. "They came at us hard and we got knocked back a bit in the first set."
 
"We regrouped well in the second game," Friend continued. "We took care of the ball and got some nice things from the pins."
 
The Trojans offense was led by Angel Dash with a match-high 21 kills while Steven Cruse and Lewis Einarson both tallied 10 putaways. Mount Olive's setter Tyler Yanez dished out a floor-high 46 assists.
 
The Flyers are back in action on Saturday (Jan. 18) when they welcome Erskine College for a 7 PM match-up at Neil Carey Arena. Fans can bring a non-perishable caned or boxed food item for free entry to the match.
