Romeoville, Ill. – The No. 9 Lewis University men's volleyball team extended their winning-streak to three with a 3-1 (25-15, 23-25, 27-25, 25-21) victory over Erskine College on Saturday (Jan. 18) at Neil Carey Arena.
The Flyers improve to 4-2 on the year while Erskine falls to 0-2 on the campaign.
Lewis was led by redshirt sophomore outside hitter
Will McCall (Fellsmere, Fla./Sebastian River), who posted a career-high 13 kills, four digs, two assists and one block assist. Redshirt sophomore opposite
Patrick Lilly (East Northport, N.Y./Commack) collected 10 kills, seven digs and one block assist while redshirt junior outside hitter
Eric Butch (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) chipped in nine kills, seven digs, five block assists and one solo block. Sophomore setter
Scott Fifer (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) had a career-high 43 assists, four digs and three block assists as junior libero
Andy Orf (St. Charles, Mo./Christian Brothers) had 12 digs.
"The guys battled hard throughout the match," Lewis head men's volleyball coach
Dan Friend said. "We had some different guys in the line-up tonight that took advantage of the opportunity."
The Flyers collected 48 kills with 18 errors in 103 attempts to hit .291 while holding Erskine to swing .164 (52 K, 30 E, 134 TA). The Flyers also out-blocked Erskine, 11-to-7.
After the match was knotted at a set apiece, the Flyers dug deep in the third set when Erskine tied the set at 24-all. Erskine picked up a service ace to take the lead, 25-24, but Butch tallied a kill while the Flyers collected an Erskine error to regain the lead at 26-25. James Hofmann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Archbishop McNicholas) and Lilly sealed the 27-25 set victory for the Flyers.
Erskine didn't let up on the Flyers, tying the match at 16-all in the fourth set. The Flyers went on a four-point run to regain the lead which provided the needed cushion for the set and match victory. The Flyers picked up a kill from McCall as well as three total blocks during the run.
The Erskine offense was led by Mike Kawa's 16 kills, seven digs and three block assists. Roberto Perez Vargas chipped in 15 kills, two aces, two solo blocks and a block assist while Michael Michelau tallied 12 kills, eight digs and a solo block. Erskine's setter Corey Marks had a floor-high 48 assists while libero Michael Schneck collected eight digs.
The Flyers next head on the road to take on Harvard University on Friday (Jan. 24) at the Malkin Athletic Center in Cambridge, Mass. First serve is set for 7 PM ET.
