EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Reigning Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year Kim Vertin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central) recorded 13 kills in Lewis women's volleyball's 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-19) sweep of conference foe Southern Indiana on Saturday (Oct. 4) afternoon

Lewis out-hit the Screaming Eagles .317 to .194 and recorded nearly as many aces (6) as hitting errors (8).

Junior Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) also reached double-digit kills with 10. She had kills on point 25 in sets one and two. Davito also finished with four aces. Junior Cassidy Parsons (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) and senior Amy Choi (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) each had 13 digs.

In the third set, USI rallied to tie the score at 18 with a 5-1 run. Vertin earned a kill for point 19 and then picked up a block assist for point 20. It spurred a 7-1 push for the Flyers that put the match away.

"The team fought hard," Lewis head coach Lorelee Smith said. "We had some long rallies where we stayed engaged and aggressive. This is a good win to have against a very powerful Southern Indiana team."

Lewis' win moves the Flyers' win streak to eight matches. The Flyers have lost just one set in this stretch. It matches Lewis' longest win streak last season.

Southern Indiana falls to 8-6 (4-5 GLVC). Lewis improves to 13-2 (8-1 GLVC). The Flyers return home on Friday (Oct. 10) against Saint Joseph's. First serve in the GLVC contest is set for 7 p.m.
