Romeoville, Ill. - Lewis University junior
Krystian Nowak (Bridgeview, Ill./Argo) had seen action in just two games prior to Sunday's contest against Bellarmine, but when Flyer head men's soccer coach
Evan Fiffles inserted him into the game against the Knights, the Bridgeview, Ill., native delivered.
Nowak broke a scoreless tie in the 89th minute with his first collegiate goal to give the host Flyers the 1-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over Bellarmine at Lewis Stadium.
He took a feed from junior midfielder
Lenin Roa-Tapia (Schaumburg, Ill./Hoffman Estates) at the 15-yard line and blasted it past Bellarmine goalkeeper Tommy Hebert for the score inside the left post.
"Throughout the game, I was taking shots because the goalie was off his line," Nowak said. "Lenny passed the ball back to me, I saw the goalie was off his line.
"I saw that the far post was open and the wind just kind of kept it in."
With the win, Lewis improves to 6-2-2 overall and 5-1-2 in GLVC action, while the visiting Knights fall to 4-6-1 on the campaign and 2-5-1 in conference play.
Hebert made eight saves on the afternoon, while his counterpart
Omar Ramirez (Houston, Texas/Elsik) earned his fourth shutout of the season. As a team, Lewis outshot the Knights, 21-9, including a 9-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Lewis returns to action on Friday (Oct. 10), as the Flyers head to St. Louis, Mo., to square off with UMSL for a 7:30 PM first kick.
