No. 11 Lewis Men's Volleyball Takes On George Mason On Friday

First serve is set for 7 PM at Neil Carey Arena


Romeoville, Ill - The No. 11 Lewis University men's volleyball team welcomes George Mason to Neil Carey Arena for a non-conference match-up on Friday (March 14). First serve on Leprechaun Night is set for 7 PM. 

LAST TIME WE FACED OFF - The Flyers swept the 2013 season series against George Mason. On March 6th, Powell led the way with 21 kills and 14 digs while Jay Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) chipped 18 putaways and 13 digs. 

LAST TIME OUT - Lewis defeated Ohio State 3-0, (25-21, 25-21, 25-20) on March 11 for their fourth-straight straight-set victory this season. Redshirt junior outside hitters Geoff Powell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) led the Flyers with 14 putaways while junior outside hitter Greg Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) chipped in 12 kills. 

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK- Powell was named MIVA Offensive Player of the Week while junior libero Lucas Yanez (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) picked up the MIVA Defensive Player of the Week on March 4. Powell hit .706 (37 K, 1 E, 51 TA) in six set of play against Quincy and Lindenwood. Yanez collected 20 digs posting a .960 reception percentage while committing only one error in 25 attempts. 

AGAINST THE MIVA - The Flyers are second in hitting percentage (.331) and in blocks-per-set (2.78) in the conference. Lewis is fourth in kills (12.43) and assists-per-set (11.67). 

AMONG THE NATION - The Flyers headed into the week third in the country in hitting percentage, swinging .331 (721 K, 240 E, 1455 TA) as squad. The Flyers are also ninth in the country with a 2.78 blocks-per-set average. 

IN THE NATIONAL RANKS - On March 3rd, the Flyers were ranked at No. 11 in the ninth installment of the 2014 AVCA Division I-II Men's Coaches Top-15 Poll. Lewis has been in the AVCA National Rankings for 58-straight weeks, dating back to Jan. 2011. 

BLOCKING THE MIVA – Sophomore middle blocker Bobby Walsh (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) is second in the MIVA with 66 total blocks (9 solo, 58 BA) and fifth nationally with a 1.28 block-per-set average. Redshirt freshman middle blocker Jacob Schmiegelt (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) is fourth with 38 total blocks (3 solo, 35 BA) averaging 1.00 blocks-per-set. Senior setter BJ Boldog (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) is 13th with 42 total blocks (10 solo, 33 BA) averaging 0.84 blocks-per-set. 

UP NEXT FOR THE FLYERS - Lewis heads into Chicago to take on Loyola on Tuesday (March 18). The Flyers jump out of conference play to host EIVA teams Saint Francis, on March 21 on Military Appreciation Night, and Penn State on March 22 for a Red Out match-up.
