Lewis Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Findlay, W, 4-2; L, 7-6

The Flyer bats were in action in both contests, but couldn’t get the runs across in the second game.

Winter Haven, Fla. – The Lewis University baseball team split their doubleheader against Findlay, taking the first game 4-2 in seven innings before Findlay took the nightcap 7-6 on Sunday (March 2).
 
The Flyers move to 4-2 on the year while the Oilers go to 1-1 on the season.
 
"In the first game, we jumped on them early," Lewis head baseball coach Tim McDonough said. "Findlay just got the big hit when we didn't take cash in on our opportunities to score runs in the second game."
 
In the first game, Lewis took an early three run lead in the bottom of the first inning. Kyle Thomas (Homer Glen, Ill./Providence Catholic), Brandon Collins (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln Way North) and Joe Sparacio (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) all collected RBIs with two outs.
 
Findlay picked up two runs on a double by Nick Antonides in the top of the second.
 
Senior Drew Buddle (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) scored junior Mike Barajas (Chicago, Ill./Nazareth) to push the Flyers lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth, setting up Lewis starter junior Eann Cox (Erie, Ill./Erie) for the win.
 
The second game of the doubleheader was more of a back and forth affair between the squads. Lewis took an early lead when Collins scored two runs on a hit in the top of the first.
 
The Oilers cut into the Flyers lead, scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning on a sacrifice fly.
 
In the second inning, the Flyers pushed their lead to 3-1, but the Oilers scratched thee runs across to take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the frame.
 
Lewis scored a run in the fourth, but Findlay answered with two of their own to regain the one-run lead.  
 
In the seventh, the Flyers put the ball in play to tie the game at 5-all before adding another run in the eighth for a 6-5 lead. Findlay tied the game again in the bottom of the eighth and scored the game winner in the next inning.
 
The Flyers are back in action on Monday (March 3) when they take on Grand Valley State at 6 PM ET.
