Game 2 Box Score (pdf)Romeoville, Ill. – On a blustery day at Brennan Field, the Lewis University baseball team was able to rebound after falling to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside 19-9 (7 inn.) in the first game to come away with a 2-1 victory in the second game of the Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Tuesday (April 1).
The Flyers improve to 14-11 on the year and 8-5 in the GLVC while the Rangers move to 7-14 on the season and 5-9 in the conference.
Lewis got on the board first in the second game of the doubleheader as sophomore
Joe Sparacio (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) scored on a passed ball in the second inning.
The Rangers were able to even the score in the top of the fifth when Ryan Ruediger doubled in Eric DuCharme.
The Flyers retook the lead when junior
Mike Barajas (Chicago, Ill./Nazareth) singled in sophomore
Joel Rotkvich (Crestwood, Ill./St. Laurence). Rotkvich singled to get on base, stole second and reached third after senior
Alex Slaby (Davenport, Iowa/Davenport West) put down a sacrifice bunt to the right side of the infield.
Lewis starter
Kyle Klosak (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) threw a complete game for the win, gave up one unearned run on three hits. Klosak (1-1) also struck out seven Rangers.
The Rangers Joseph Plaud (1-2) was tagged with the loss, after giving up two runs, one earned on eight hits. Plaud walked one and struck out four.
The Rangers jumped on the Flyers in the first game, posting eight runs on eight hits and one Lewis miscue in the first inning.
Lewis picked up a run in the bottom of the first as senior
Ben Albano (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs) scored Slaby on a fielders choice up the middle. The Flyers added two runs in the third, four in the fifth and two in the six but they were only able to keep the Rangers bats quiet for three innings.
The Rangers plated three runs in the third, six in the fourth and two in the sixth inning as they picked up the 19-9 conference victory.
Lewis starter
Eann Cox (Erie, Ill./Erie) was credited with the loss after only collecting one out in the first. Cox (3-3) gave up eight runs, seven earned on seven hits and walked one.
The Rangers John Perez picked up the win, giving up nine runs, seven earned, on 15 hits in seven innings of work. Perez (2-4) also struck out one and walked one.
"We are a little thin on pitching after playing six games in three days," Lewis head baseball coach
Tim McDonough said. "Kyle stepped up to throw an outstanding game for us in game two.
"I am not pleased on how we played in game one, but I am happy how we were able to bounce back in game two."
The Flyers are back in action on Saturday (April 5
th) when they head on the road Indianapolis, Ind., for a four-game series against the University of Indianapolis. First pitch at Greyhound Park is set for 12 PM ET.
