Block Defense Carries No. 11 Lewis Men’s Volleyball Past Grand Canyon, 3-0

Bobby Walsh tallied seven total blocks and seven kills in the victory.

Romeoville, Ill. –  Lewis University sophomore middle blocker Bobby Walsh (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) lead the No. 11 men's volleyball team with seven total blocks helping the Flyers out-block Grand Canyon, 14.5 to 4.5, on Friday (April 11) as the Flyers swept the Antelopes 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-16) at Neil Carey Arena.
 
The Flyers improve to 20-6 on the season and 10-3 in Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball action while the Antelopes fall to 14-16 on the year and 2-11 in the league.
 
"We had a good game against a solid Grand Canyon team," Lewis head men's volleyball head coach Dan Friend said. "We kept tough service pressure on them that kept us in system all night, which allowed us to get some separation to get the win."
 
Walsh also hit .583 with seven kills and no errors in 12 attempts. Redshirt junior outside hitter Geoff Powell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) tallied 12 putaways and four errors in 21 attempts to swing at a .381 clip, as well as four digs and two total blocks.
 
Junior outside hitter Greg Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) had nine kills, four block assists, two assists and two digs, while junior libero Lucas Yanez (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) collected nine digs and three assists. Redshirt senior setter BJ Boldog (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) had 30 assists, six digs, four block assists and two kills.
 
The Flyers swung at a .325 clip with 35 kills and 10 errors on 77 attempts, while holding the Antelopes to a .096 (35 K, 26 E, 94 TA) hitting percentage. Lewis only tallied one team reception error while collecting five aces, including two by junior opposite Eric Fitterer (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville).
 
The Antelope offense was led by Ben Ponnet's nine kills and eight digs, while Robbie Brannick chipped in nine putaways. Grand Canyon's setter Keith Smith dished out a floor-high 31 assists.
 
The Flyers and Antelopes meet again on Saturday (April 12) for a 7 PM MIVA match at Neil Carey Arena on Senior Night. Seniors Victor Schaefer (Cooper City, Fla./Chaminade Madonna College Prep), Yiwei Zhou (Nanjing, China/Nanjing No. 1) and Boldog will be honored prior to the start of the match.
