Romeoville, Ill. – The No. 11 Lewis University men's volleyball collected their third-straight sweep of the Grand Canyon Antelopes with a 3-0 (29-27, 25-18, 25-20) victory on Friday (April 18) in a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament quarterfinals match-up at Neil Carey Arena.

The Flyers improve to 22-6 on the year while the Antelopes finish with a 14-18 mark.

"It's tough to play the same team three times in seven days," Lewis head men's volleyball coach Dan Friend said. "Even though we knew Grand Canyon would come out aggressive in the first game, they put us on our heels a bit."

"It was great to see us stay calm in a tough and chaotic game and find a way to get it done," Friend continued. "We really stepped it up in the second in third set which gave us some separation to get the win in three."

Lewis redshirt junior outside hitter Geoff Powell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) led the Flyer offense, hitting at a .548 clip with 19 kills and two errors in 31 attempts, while collecting four digs. Junior outside hitter Greg Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) chipped in eight putaways, seven digs and five total blocks (1 solo, 4 BA), while sophomore middle blocker Bobby Walsh (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) had six kills, and three total blocks (1 solo, 3 BA). Lewis redshirt senior BJ Boldog (Palatine, Ill./Palatine) dished out 37 assists while junior libero Lucas Yanez (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) collected nine digs.

In a tight first set, the squads tied the frame 12 times. The Flyers knotted the game at 27-all on Powell's ninth putaway of the set. Lewis took the next two points on an Antelope attack error and an ace by Powell for the 29-27 set victory.

After a kill by Powell tied the second set at 13-13, the Flyers used the momentum to go on a five-point run to take an 18-13 lead. After a putaway by junior opposite Eric Fitterer (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville), the Flyers collected a block assist by Walsh and Petty, as well as three Antelope attack errors in the run. The Flyers were able to cruise to a 25-18 set victory as Powell led Lewis with five putaways in the set.

Lewis extended their momentum to the third set, heating up to hit .591 with 14 kills and one error in 22 attempts and out blocked the Antelopes 3-to-0. Powell posted five kills in the set, while Petty picked up three putaways and two block assists.

The Flyers out hit the Antelopes, swinging at a .434 clip with 41 kills and eight errors in 76 attempts while holding Grand Canyon to a .200 hitting percentage (38 K, 20 E, 90 TA). Lewis out-blocked Grand Canyon, 10.0-to-3.0, in the match.

Robbie Brannick's 18 kills and seven digs led the Antelopes, while Ben Ponnet posted 12 putaways. Grand Canyon setter Keith Smith dished out 35 assists.

The Flyers advance to face Ball State in the MIVA Tournament semifinals on Wednesday (April 23). First serve on White Out Night is set for 7 PM at Neil Carey Arena.
