Evansville, Ind. – The Lewis University baseball team got strong pitching performances by freshmen starters Sam Couch (Bolingbrook, Ill./Joliet Catholic) and Brad Elmore (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook), as well as junior reliever Kyle Klosak (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North), but the Flyers fell victim to No. 18 Southern Indiana on Saturday (April 19), falling 4-3 in game one and 4-3 in 14 innings in the nightcap at USI Field.

The Flyers move to 19-19 on the season and 12-13 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action while the Screaming Eagles improve to 30-8 on the year and 22-4 in league play.

"We got great pitching from Sam, Brad and Kyle today," Lewis head baseball coach Tim McDonough said. "I was proud of the way we fought all weekend long.

"It is very disappointing to not come away with any wins, but if we play the rest of the season the way we did today, I think we will find ourselves in a good position."

In the first game USI took a quick 1-0 lead, scoring a run on one hit, a two-base error and sacrifice fly to left field.

The Flyers tied the game in the top of the second as junior Mike Barajas (Chicago, Ill./Nazareth) doubled in senior Ben Albano (West Dundee, Ill./Jacobs), who reached base to start the inning with a single up the middle.

The Screaming Eagles retook the lead when they added a single run in the bottom of the second.

Lewis sophomore Joe Sparacio (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) hit a sacrifice fly to score senior Jake Murray (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) in the fourth inning and the Flyers had a chance to a crooked number on the board but left two stranded.  The Screaming Eagles again added a run in the bottom of the frame to stay just ahead of the Flyers.

The teams both scored in the fifth and the Flyer bats ran out of opportunities, going down in order in the sixth and seventh.

Couch took the loss for the Flyers, giving up four runs, two earned, on seven hits in six innings of work. Couch (6-2) also walked and struck out two.

USI reliever Scott Haag picked up the win, throwing a third of an inning. Haag (2-1) walked one before getting out of the fifth. Matt Chavarria picked up his ninth save of the season after tossing a scoreless seventh.

In the second game the Flyers got on the board in the fourth inning, when Sparacio singled in Albano from third. Albano singled to get on base and stole second before advancing to third on the fly ball by sophomore Austin Mastela (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport).

Elmore was able to get out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth allowing only one USI run to score. Elmore tossed 6.1 innings, giving up the one run on eight hits, while striking out two and walking three.

The teams stayed knotted at 1-1 until the 14th inning. Senior Kyle Kapka (Mount Prospect, Ill./Prospect) doubled in Mastela and Sparacio to give the Flyers a 3-1 lead.

Southern Indiana came back in the bottom of the inning to score three runs on three hits and a Flyer miscue for the 4-3 win.

Klosak took the loss for the Flyers after throwing 6.2 innings of work. Klosak (2-2) gave up three runs, two earned, on four hits and struck out one.

USI's Chavarria collected the win, throwing an inning in relief. Chavarria gave up two runs, walked and struck out one.

The Flyers jump out of GLVC action to take on area rival St. Francis (Ill.) on Tuesday (April 22) for a 3 PM first pitch at Brennan Field.
