Liberty, Mo. - The Lewis University men's soccer team was unable to overcome slow starts to both halves and had to settle for a 2-2 (2 OT) tie against William Jewell on Friday (Sept. 19) night, extending the Flyers' unbeaten streak to four matches at Greene Stadium.
William Jewell scored both of their goals within the first 75 seconds of the first and second halves. WJC freshman forward Aaron Froehlich headed in a corner kick from Quinton Conyers at the 1:12 mark to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead, while classmate Jordan Lindsey broke a 1-all tie just 31 seconds into the final period.
"We have to be able to play 90 minutes," Lewis head men's soccer coach
Evan Fiffles said. "We can't continue to start each half and play as poorly as we did tonight."
With the tie, Lewis moves to 3-1-1 on the campaign and 2-0-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play, while William Jewell is now 0-3-2 overall and 0-1-2 in conference play.
Lewis senior defender
Michael Pyle (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) provided the original Flyer equalizer, as he headed in a corner kick by sophomore midfielder
Nicholas Monteiro (Brasillia, Brazil/School of the Nations) in the 24th minute to even the score up at 1-apiece.
Following Lindsey's goal, Lewis senior forward
George Thomson (Kilmarnock, Scotland/Reid Kerr College) deflected a long feed from senior midfielder
Jake Karasiewicz (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) past WJC goalkeeper Shane Van Hooser for the game-tying score at the 75:08 mark. Thomson now has six goals in the Flyers last four games.
Van Hooser finished with seven saves, while Lewis goalkeeper
Omar Ramirez (Houston, Texas/Elsik) made one stop.
As a team, Lewis outshot WJC, 22-9, including a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Lewis returns to action on Sunday (Sept. 21) for a 2:30 PM first kick against Rockhurst.
