Evansville, Ind. - The six match unbeaten streak came to an end for the Lewis University men's soccer team, as Southern Indiana's Josh Weinzapfel broke a scoreless tie in the 85th minute to give the host Screaming Eagles the 1-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over the Flyers at Strassweg Field on Sunday (Sept. 28) afternoon.
"It's been a long trip with four road games (over the past two weeks), and frankly we're exhausted," Lewis head men's soccer coach
Evan Fiffles said. "When you're on the road for eight out of the last 11 days, it really grinds on you."
With the win, Southern Indiana improves to 3-4-1 on the campaign and 2-3-1 in GLVC action, while the host Flyers fall to 5-2-1 on the season and 4-1-1 in conference play.
As a team, Lewis outshot USI, 9-7, but the Screaming Eagles held a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal.
USI goalkeeper Auston Bruder earned the shutout with two saves, while Flyer netminder
Omar Ramirez (Houston, Texas/Elsik) stopped four shots.
Lewis returns to action on Friday (Oct. 3), as the Flyers welcome McKendree to Lewis Stadium for Youth Soccer and Alumni Day. First kick is slated for 5 PM.
