The No. 5 Lewis University men's volleyball team welcomes Carthage College to Neil Carey Arena for a non-conference match-up on Wednesday (January 14). First serve on "Facial Hair Night" is set for 7 p.m. The first 50 fans will receive a free mustaches. Students will also receive FREE pizza on Wednesday prior to the match with Carthage.
LAST TIME WE MET – The Flyers swept the Red Men in three on January 18, 2011. Jay Petty lead the Flyers in kills with 15 for the match hitting .619. The Flyers out-hit Carthage .500 to .184 in the 2011 home opener for the Flyers. The two clubs were supposed to play in 2013, but the match was canceled due to weather.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Senior
Greg Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) was named MIVA Offensive Player of the Week on January 13. Petty hit .370 with 47 kills and three aces in Lewis' first three matches of the season last week. He helped Lewis to the Flyers' first ever win over UC Irvine.
AGAINST THE MIVA – The Flyers are second in hitting percentage (.317), assists (137) and kills (145) in the MIVA stat rankings. The Flyers are first in blocks with 38 blocks averaging 3.41 blocks per set.
IN THE NATIONAL RANKS – Over this past week the Flyers moved up from ranking No. 9 in the country to No. 5 which matches the highest in the
Dan Friend era. Lewis opened the 2013 season also ranked No. 5.
BLOCKING THE MIVA – Senior opposite hitter
Eric Fitterer (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) is first in the MIVA averaging 2.00 blocks per set and junior
Bobby Walsh (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) is third with an average of 1.55 blocks per set.
SETTING THE TABLE – Junior setter
Scott Fifer (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) opened the season as Lewis' starting setter. Fifer averaged 10.27 assists per set ranking fourth in the conference.
THURSDAY WILL BE A BANNER DAY – The 2014 Lewis men's volleyball squad will be honored on Thursday (Jan. 15) at halftime of the Lewis men's basketball game vs. McKendree. A banner for the 2014 squad will be added to Neil Carey Arena.
UP NEXT FOR THE FLYERS – Lewis stays at home to take on Harvard on Friday (January 16). The Flyers continue non-conference play with road matches at Saint Francis and Penn State.
