Romeoville, Ill. - Rockhurst junior midfielder Gianluca Bottoni scored the game-winning goal in the 93rd minute to help the No. 12 Hawks to the 2-1 come-from-behind Great Lakes Valley Conference overtime victory over the Lewis University men's soccer team at Lewis Stadium on Friday (Oct. 23) night.
"You have to expect to win games," Lewis head men's soccer coach
Evan Fiffles said. "We didn't do what we needed to do (tonight).
"There are no moral victories and (the result) doesn't mean anything," Fiffles continued. "We have to come out ready to play for 90+ minutes and we didn't do enough to get the result today."
With the win, Rockhurst improves to 11-1-2 overall and 11-1-1 in conference play, while the Flyers fall to 1-13-1 on the campaign and 1-11-1 in GLVC action.
The Flyers got on the board in the 26th minute, as senior
Luke Comerouski (Itasca, Ill./Christian Liberty Academy) headed in a cross pass from freshman
Christian Goushas (Lemont, Ill./Lemont). Junior midfielder
Nicholas Monteiro (Brasillia, Brazil/School of the Nations) also assisted on the play.
The score would remain that way for over 50 minutes, before Rockhurst forward Mitch Moncada beat Lewis goalkeeper
Aaron Menyes (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove North) to even it up at 1-apiece at the 77:14 mark.
Bottoni's heroics came at the 92:01 mark, as he uncorked a screamer past Menyes (six saves) from 28 yards out for the walk-off win.
Rockhurst outshot Lewis, 22-3, including an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Lewis returns to action on Sunday (Oct. 25), as they host William Jewell for a 2:30 PM kickoff on 'Senior Day'.
