VALPARAISO, Ind. – Lewis men's swimming opened the 2015-16 campaign on Saturday (Oct. 3) with a 140-62 win over the NCAA Division I Valparaiso Crusaders.
"This was an earlier than usual start to our regular season so I had some concerns about our readiness," Lewis head coach
Roger Karns said. "In addition, we had some of our best swimmers out with illness or injury. However, the team responded better than can be hoped for with both the men and women winning every event. We had some very promising swims and it was a great way to start the year."
In his first meet as a Flyer, sophomore
Mads Knoblauch (Svenborg, Denmark/Svenborg Gymnasium) won the 200 IM (1:57.54) and 100 backstroke (52.14). He also swam the first leg of Lewis' victory in the 200 medley relay (1:35.60).
Junior
Adam Wise (Ocala, Fla./Forest) won the 50 (21.41) and the 100 freestyle (47.48)
Junior
Quinn Poti (Orlando, Fla./Timber Creek) picked up a win in the 500 freestyle (4:58.86). He also swam the first leg of Lewis' victorious 400 freestyle relay squad (3:13.67).
Junior
Aidan Brennan (Naples, Fla. /Barron Collier) used a time of 10:07.99 to win the 1000 freestyle. Junior Daniel Szakovits touched first in the 200 free with a time of 1:47.22. In the 100 fly, freshman
Colin Williams (Elk Grove, Ill./Elk Grove) used a time of 52.00 to get the win. Senior
Zach Ballon (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek) used a time of 59.52 to pull off a win in the 100 breaststroke.
"We have a large incoming class with a mix of freshmen and transfers," Karns said. "I didn't realize it until watching the meet but in a few events, all of our swimmers were in their first meet for Lewis. Today's results shows a lot of promise for the season."
Saturday's meet was Lewis' earliest start ever to a season. The Flyers return to the pool on Oct. 23 in a home meet with Great Lakes Valley Conference foe William Jewell at 5 p.m.
