Rensselaer, Ind. - Five different players scored in double-figures for the Lewis University men's basketball team as the Flyers extended their winning streak to four games with the 99-80 victory over Saint Joseph's in their Great Lakes Valley Conference opener at Scharf Fieldhouse on Thursday (Dec. 3) night.
Lewis sophomore forward
Max Strus (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) led all scorers with 20 points and nine rebounds. Flyer junior guard
Capel Henshaw (Harrisburg, Ill./Harrisburg) and senior forward
Brad Foster (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way Central) both set career-highs in scoring. Henshaw knocked down five three-pointers and finished with 17 points, while Foster went 8-for-9 from the field and collected 16 points.
Lewis junior guard
Miles Simelton (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) scored 16 points and dished out a game-high seven assists, while freshman guard
Delaney Blaylock (Wyoming, Mich./Godwin Heights) netted a season-high 15 points along with six rebounds and five assists.
"I thought it was our best overall performance of the year," Lewis head men's basketball coach
Scott Trost said. "I thought both Miles and Capel played great and it was Delaney's best game of the year as well."
With the win, Lewis improves to 6-1 on the campaign and 1-0 in GLVC action, while the host Pumas fall to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
As a team, Lewis shot 55.9% (38-for-68) from the field and committed a season-low seven turnovers on the evening. This marks the fifth time in seven games that the Flyers have shot over 50%. The Flyers had 19 assists on the 38 baskets.
"19 assists is a great indicator for us, because we shared the ball," Trost said. "It's a good win."
The 38 buckets set a season-high for the Flyers and the 99 points equals the standard they set against Northwood last week. Lewis dominated inside, as they outscored the Pumas, 46-12, in points in the paint.
Saint Joseph's senior forward Nathan Tidwell topped the Pumas with a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds, while freshman guard Davious Webster and sophomore guard Davone Daniels each scored 15 points. Puma guard Brandon Smith came off the bench for SJC and recorded 12 points.
Lewis returns to action on Saturday (Dec. 5), as they head to Indianapolis for a 3 PM ET tip-off.
