PDF BoxROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Three Flyers finished in double-digits on Wednesday (Dec. 9) evening as No. 7 Lewis women's basketball topped Saint Francis (IL) 73-61 at Neil Carey Arena in a non-conference contest. Saint Francis entered the contest ranked No. 10 in the NAIA.
The Flyers were led offensively by freshman
Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North)'s 24 points and 10 rebounds while adding four blocks. Keillher did much of her damage at the line, making 12-of-16 from the stripe. Keillher, the NCAA Division II leader in field goal percentage, finished 6-of-10 from the floor in the game.
Lewis went up for good in the second quarter, finishing the frame on a 16-3 run. Senior
Alyssa Dengler (Chicago, Ill./Trinity) drained a corner three at the buzzer to make the score 40-27 at the break.
Senior
Mariyah Brawner-Henley (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) added 18 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. She scored 14 of her points in the second half as Lewis pulled away for good. Dengler had 12 points thanks to three 3-pointers.
Wednesday was Lewis' last game before finals.
"With a long break coming up it was nice to get a win," Lewis head coach
Kristen Gillespie said. "Jess controlled the paint to get some easy baskets in the first half and Mariyah helped put the game away for us in the second."
Saint Francis suffers their first loss of the season and is now 9-1. Lewis improves to 9-1. The Flyers return to the court on Dec. 20 at Wayne State (Mich.).
