Somers, Wis. - No. 8 UW-Parkside snapped the eight-game winning streak of the Lewis University men's basketball team with the 73-68 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over the visiting Flyers at DeSimone Gymnasium on Thursday (Feb. 26) night.
UW-Parkside junior guard Jimmy Gavin collected a game-high 20 points, including three trifectas. Ranger senior center Ziggy Riauka added a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds, while senior point guard Andy Mazurczak had 12 points and a game-high four assists.
"We just didn't make enough plays tonight," Lewis head men's basketball coach
Scott Trost said. "We hung in there against a really good team, but we didn't shoot the ball very well.
"Credit Parkside for a good defensive game plan tonight."
With the win, UW-Parkside improves to 25-2 overall and 17-1 in GLVC action, while the Flyers fall to 20-7 on the campaign and 12-6 in conference play.
Lewis junior forward
Kyle Nelson (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) topped the Flyers with a season-high 16 points, followed by 12 points from freshman guard
Max Strus (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) and 11 from senior forward
David Niggins (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central).
The Flyers fought from behind for a majority of the contest, trailing by as many as 13 in the second half, as the Rangers held a 41-28 lead with 18:17 left. Lewis responded with a 14-2 run over the next 3:51, highlighted by five points from Strus, to bring the Flyers to within one at 43-42 with 14:26 remaining in the contest.
That would be as close as the Flyers would get, as UWP went on an 11-2 run with three consecutive three-pointers, including two from senior guard Jordan Mach (9 points), and did not look back.
Lewis returns to action on Sunday (March 1), as they welcome UIS to Neil Carey Arena for a 3 PM tip-off in a GLVC First Round showdown.
