William Jewell Game Notes (PDF)
Romeoville, Ill. - The Lewis University men's basketball team is in search for its third-straight win, as the Flyers (14-6, 6-5 GLVC) head to Liberty, Mo., for a 7:30 PM showdown with William Jewell (9-10, 5-6 GLVC) at the Mabee Center on Thursday (Feb. 5) night.
Live stats and video streaming of Thursday's contest - provided by William Jewell - can be found on on www.LewisFlyers.com.
ALL-TIME SERIES - The series is tied at 1-apiece.
LAST TIME WE MET - Lewis was clicking on all cylinders as the No. 22 Flyers shot 62.7% from the field, knocked down a season-high 13 three-pointers and posted a season-high in points scored in the 94-73 GLVC victory over William Jewell at Neil Carey Arena on February 8, 2014.
LAST TIME OUT - Lewis used a 13-3 second half run and shot 57.1% (16-for-28) from the field over the final 20 minutes, as the Flyers upset No. 1 ranked Indianapolis at Neil Carey Arena on Saturday (Jan. 31) afternoon.
WE SHOCKED THE WORLD - Saturday's win over Indianapolis was Lewis' first over a No. 1 team since an 82-77 victory over Southern Indiana on January 2, 2004 in Evansville.
TOP 10 - Lewis senior guard
Ryan Jackson (Bolingbrook, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield) (1,605 points) is sixth in school-history in career points. He needs 87 points to pass Brandon Dagans (2005-09) for fifth place.
THE LAST TIME - Lewis guard
Max Strus (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) has recorded two double-doubles in his freshman campaign for the Flyers. He is the first Flyer rookie to record a double-double since his brother Marty Strus (2008-12) accomplished that feat in 2008.
WELL DONE ROOKIE - Strus has scored at least 20 points in a game four times this season. He is the first Flyer freshman to score 20 points in a game since Jackson did it in 2011-12.
1,000/700 ON THE HORIZON - Senior forward
Julian Lewis (Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) needs 72 points to reach 1,000 for his career and 22 more rebounds to become just the fourth Flyer in school history to notch at least 1,000 points and 700 rebounds in the Division II era.
WINNING WITH CLASS - Lewis' current senior class (2011) needs five wins to reach the most victories (75) by a
Scott Trost recruiting class, set by last year's seniors.
TOTALLY TO THE MAX - Strus is the highest scoring (22nd, 12.6 ppg.) freshman in the GLVC.
MID-RANGE JUMPER? - Lewis has scored just 126 points this season that have not been either a three-point FG, a FG in the paint or a free throw. Those points amount to just 8.0 percent of the Flyers' scoring this season.
FREEBIES - Lewis is currently shooting 73.9% from the free throw line, which would put them tenth in school-history for single-season free throw percentage. If that holds true, six of Lewis' Top Ten free throw shooting performances for a season will be by a Trost-led team.
TAKING THE LEAD - In Lewis' 14 wins this season, they have trailed just 33:30 out of a possible 560 minutes played.
POINTS IN THE PAINT - The Flyers have a decisive advantage down low, as Lewis is averaging 35.9 points-per-game in the paint to their opponents' 20.9.
POUNDING THE GLASS - Lewis currently holds a +5.9 rebounding margin over their opponents through 20 games this season. That would be the highest rebounding margin of any Flyer team under Trost's tenure. The previous high under Trost was +4.2 in 2007-08.
FROM WAY DOWNTOWN - Lewis has hit at least 10 three-pointers in four games this season. That's the most times the Flyers have hit at least 10 trifectas since they did it five times during the 2011-12 campaign.
LESS IS MORE - The Flyers needed just 47 total field goal attempts to defeat Saginaw Valley State on November 20th. Lewis is 10-4 (.714) since 2012 when taking less than 50 shots in a contest.
POURING IN POINTS - Lewis has scored 90+ points three times this season in 20 contests. That's the most times the Flyers have reached the 90-point plateau since they did it three times during the 2011-12 campaign.
SIZEABLE VICTORIES - Lewis has had nine victories of 20+ points or more this season, which is the most by a Flyer team during the Division II era (1980-present).
CLOSE CALLS - Lewis' six losses have been by an average of 4.8 points-per-game, including one overtime loss against No. 6 Bellarmine (Jan. 22).
FROM LONG RANGE - Sophomore guard
Capel Henshaw (Harrisburg, Ill./Harrisburg) is currently second in school-history in career three-point FG%, as he has converted 45.0% (50-for-111) of his attempts.
FROM LONG RANGE (PART DEUX) - Lewis, led by Henshaw, has seven players who shoot 35% or above from beyond the three-point arc for their careers.
DISHING DIMES - Jackson has dished out 35 of his team-best 68 assists in the Flyers' last seven games, including a career-high nine dimes against McKendree (Jan. 15).
HEAT CHECK - If the season ended today, both senior guard
Gabe Williams (Chicago, Ill./Farragut) (6th, 46.9%) and Henshaw (10th, 45.8%) would rank among the single-season best three-point shooters in school-history.
RANKED SCHMANKED - Lewis has defeated at least one nationally-ranked Division II team in each of the last five seasons, following their win over No. 1 Indianapolis.
SMOKIN' HOT - Lewis has won 43 of its last 57 contests dating back to the 2012-13 campaign for a winning percentage of .754.
