Quincy, Ill. -
The Lewis University pitching staff of Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) and Lainie Schweickert (Peru, Ill./St. Bede Academy) did not need much help on Saturday (March 14), as the duo combined to hold Quincy to three hits in two games, as the Flyer softball team earned the 1-0, 4-2 doubleheader sweep over the host Hawks in both teams' Great Lakes Valley Conference opener at the Mart Heinen Complex.

Bowler (9-3) tossed her second career no-hitter in the opener as she faced the minimum 21 batters and struck out four. In the nightcap, Schweickert (2-3) held the Hawks hitless for the first 4.1 innings and allowed one earned run and struck out four to earn the victory. Bowler picked up her second save of the season as she thwarted a one out, bases-loaded Quincy rally in the bottom of the seventh inning.

"I really thought that Kelly and Lainie kept the Quincy hitters on their heels today and I don't think they really knew what was coming," Lewis head softball coach Becky Pearl said of her starting pitchers.

With the sweep, Lewis improves to 11-6 on the campaign and 2-0 in GLVC action, while the host Hawks are now 8-8 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

In the opener, Lewis scored their lone run of the game on a RBI groundout by senior center fielder Justina Doll (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein). Junior catcher Brittany Russell (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East) accounted for two of the Flyers' five hits in game one, going 2-for-2 with a walk.

In the nightcap, Lewis' three through five hitters of sophomore shortstop Carly Jaworski (Lemont, Ill./Lemont), senior first baseman Kelsey Ullrich (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North) and freshman catcher Sarah DeMasi (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) batted a combined 7-for-12 with two RBI. DeMasi went 3-for-4, while Jaworski (run) and Ullrich both went 2-for-4.

Lewis returns to action on Sunday (March 15), as the Flyers travel to Kirksville, Mo., for a 12 PM doubleheader against Truman State.
