Immokalee, Fla. - The Lewis University women's tennis team was spotted two wins and cleaned up the rest en route to their 9-0 non-conference blanking of Ave Maria at the AMU Tennis Center on Monday (March 2) evening. Ave Maria only fielded five players for the match.
"We made some progress with our outdoor play, but we still need to sharpen up some things," Lewis head women's tennis coach
Brett Bridel said.
With the win, Lewis improves to 2-2 on the campaign, while the host Gyrenes remain winless at 0-8.
At No. 1 doubles, freshman
Nora Mindiyarova (Moscow, Russia/Gimnasium 1577) and sophomore
Ana Banic (Skradin, Croatia/Gimnazija Antuna Vrancica) paired up for the 8-4 victory over Ave Maria's Marianna Vargas and Mary Kate Lee. Mindiyarova went on to beat Vargas, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1 singles, while Banic rallied for the 2-6, 6-1, 10-5 win over Lee at No. 2 singles.
Lewis' No. 2 doubles tandem of juniors
Jill Wetmore (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa) and
Megan Nguyen (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora) downed Ave Maria's Alexandra Lis-Planells and Jessica Cocks, 8-1. Nguyen blanked Cocks, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, while Wetmore beat Lis-Planells, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4 singles.
Lewis' final victory came at No. 5 singles, as Flyer junior
Jamie Drez (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) downed Katie Tredeau, 6-0, 6-0.
Lewis returns to action on Wednesday (March 4), as the Flyers take on Palm Beach Atlantic for a 5 PM ET first serve.
