Geoff Powell (Claremont, Calif./Claremont) recorded a double-double of 10 kills and 10 digs with four blocks (one solo) and three aces to help No. 4 Lewis men's volleyball top Ball State 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-17) in a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association contest on Thursday (March 26) night at Neil Carey Arena.
Both lead changes and 13 ties in the match came in the opening set. It was a 13-13 game in the first when the Flyers scored eight straight points. Powell had three aces in a row in the run. It was part of a larger 12-2 run by the Flyers to end the set.
The rest of the match was all Lewis. The Flyers started the second set with leads of 3-0 and 8-4. Lewis led the third 11-4 before Ball State made it interesting with six straight points. The push forced a Lewis timeout, but the break worked for the Flyers. Senior 
Eric Fitterer (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) had a kill out of the timeout to put the Flyers up 12-10. Lewis cruised from that point.
Senior 
Greg Petty (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) finished with nine kills and four digs. Fitterer totaled eight kills.
Junior 
Bobby Walsh (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) had seven kills on seven swings for a perfect 1.000 attack percentage. He also added four blocks (one solo). Bobby's brother, Ball State's Matt Walsh, finished with three blocks (one solo) with seven kills on nine swings.
Lewis recorded seven aces while not allowing a single one.
Junior 
Scott Fifer (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) had 32 assists and drove a Lewis offense that out-hit Ball State .307 to .112. The Flyers sided out at an 80 percent clip in the match. 
"Scotty did a nice job establishing our offense from the get go," Lewis head coach 
Dan Friend said. "We definitely put some pressure on Ball State and the guys just kept it going."
Ball State falls to 12-12 (5-7 MIVA). Lewis improves to 18-2 (9-1 MIVA). The Flyers continue MIVA play on Saturday (March 28) at IPFW in a first serve against the Mastodons at 7 p.m. ET.
