Belleville, Ill. – The Lewis University women's tennis team came out strong in the top of its lineup, as they defeated McKendree University for the 6-3 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory at the Kings Point Sports Club on Friday (March 27) afternoon.
"[We] played solid doubles to grab a 2-1 lead and then our top four did [a] great job in singles to secure the team win," Lewis head women's tennis coach
Brett Bridel said.
With the victory, the Flyers improve to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in GLVC action, while McKendree falls to 9-8 on the season and 0-2 in conference play. The win also marks a fourth straight victory for the Flyers.
At No. 1 doubles, Lewis freshman
Nora Mindiyarova (Moscow, Russia/Gimnasium 1577) and sophomore
Ana Banic (Skradin, Croatia/Gimnazija Antuna Vrancica) paired together for the 8-4 victory over McKendree's Sammy Siegel and Kelcie Comley. Mindiyarova added a 6-3, 6-0 win over Siegel at No. 1 singles, while Banic earned a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Janelle Fung at No. 3 singles.
The Flyers' junior tandem of
Megan Nguyen (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora) and
Jill Wetmore (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa) earned an 8-2 victory over Fung and Sara Janulavich at No. 2 doubles. Nguyen would also add a 6-2, 6-1 win over Comley at No. 2 singles, while Wetmore downed Anna Mernick 7-6, 7-5 at No. 4 singles.
Lewis returns to action on Saturday (March 28), as they travel to Evansville, Ind., for a 10 AM match against Southern Indiana.
