The win moves Lewis to the MIVA Semifinals. The Flyers will host No. 5 seed Lindenwood on Tuesday (April 28) evening at Neil Carey Arena. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
The eighth seeded Antelopes had 22 kills to 25 errors. That total was due in large part to Lewis' blocking defense. The top seeded Flyers out-blocked the Antelopes 11.5 to 2.0.
Senior
Eric Fitterer (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) recorded eight kills, five aces and four block assists to total 15 points.
Lewis held a 10-3 edge in aces.
"We talked a lot about serving great in our gym," Lewis head coach
Dan Friend said. "I don't think we've served as well in our gym as we have on the road. I thought the guys did a nice job of implementing that."
Junior
Scott Fifer (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) totaled 28 assists as five different Flyers notched four or more kills. Junior middle blocker
Bobby Walsh (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) had six kills on six swings while adding five block assists.
"Scotty did a nice job of distributing the ball," Friend said.
The match featured just six ties and two lead changes. Lewis sided out at 80 percent in the contest, keeping Grand Canyon's longest run to three points. Even then the Flyers were already in control as the run put the Antelopes down five points at 13-8 in the third set.
Grand Canyon ends the season 14-17. Lewis improves to 25-2.
