In the fifth set, Missouri S&T used a kill by Carlie Combs to take a 10-8 lead. Then the Flyers came alive. Senior
Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) and freshman
Elizabeth Hyland (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) followed with kills to tie it. A Missouri S&T attack error put Lewis up a point and forced a Missouri S&T timeout. Davito followed with another kill, however Lewis' two-point advantage was short lived as Missouri S&T quickly tied the score at 12. But they would be Missouri S&T's final points of the match. Lewis went to the freshman Hyland to give them a 13-12 lead. Junior
Carolyn Nojiri (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) entered to serve and her float serve helped throw the Missouri S&T offense out of rhythm. Nojiri also added a dig in the resulting rally that concluded with a kill by senior
Morgan Cebula (Stevens Point, Wis./Stevens Point Area). Up 14-12, Lewis took advantage of match point when a Missouri S&T attack attempt went into the net.
"Carolyn and Morgan stepped up on both offense and defense in the fifth set from points 10 to 15 to help get us the win," Lewis head coach
Lorelee Smith said.
Five different Flyers reached double-digit kills as Lewis out-hit Missouri S&T .212 to .172. Sophomore
Maddie Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) had 11 kills, seven digs and five block assists. Davito finished with 12 kills and a pair of aces. Junior
Nicole Yuede (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) totaled 28 digs and an ace.
Lewis moves to 10-1 (2-0 GLVC). The Flyers have won nine consecutive matches. Missouri S&T falls to 6-5 (0-2 GLVC). Lewis returns to the court on Friday (Sept. 25) at Maryville.
