PDF BoxST. LOUIS, Mo. – Lewis women's volleyball used a furious rally in set four to cap a 3-1 (25-21, 16-25, 25-15, 27-25) victory at Maryville on Friday (Sept. 25) evening in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match at Moloney Arena. The victory extends Lewis' win-streak to 10 matches. The streak is Lewis' longest since 2011 when the Flyers won 12 in a row.
Senior
Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) hit .533 with 19 kills, two blocks and an ace. Sophomore
Aly Schneider (Granger, Ind./Penn) hit .600 with 14 kills and eight blocks. The duo helped Lewis out-hit the Saints .315 to .204.
The match seemed destined for a fifth set when the Saints grabbed a 19-14 lead in the fourth. However the Flyers responded with an 8-1 run. Schneider had three kills and Davito added two in the stretch. Maryville pushed back though with four straight points to earn set point at 24-23. Lewis went to freshman
Elizabeth Hyland (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) for a kill to knot it up again. Maryville had another set point at 25-24, only to be denied by a Davito kill. It would be Maryville's final chance to stay alive. A Davito kill, a Maryville error and a Davito kill on match point gave Lewis the contest.
The fourth set had 10 ties and seven lead changes. It brought some drama to a match that featured lopsided scores in the first three sets.
"Alexis and Aly did a great job of managing the ball, providing kills and keeping us in the match." Lewis head coach
Lorelee Smith said. "Maryville does a good job of minimizing errors. You have to earn points. Aly and Alexis earned points for us tonight."
Hyland had a match-high 17 digs as she helped Lewis hold a 58-49 edge in digs. Lewis out-blocked Maryville 10-3.
Lewis improves to 11-1 (3-0 GLVC). Maryville falls to 5-6 (1-2 GLVC). Lewis plays at Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday in a 3 p.m. start.
