PDF BoxHONOLULU, Hawaii – No. 8 Lewis men's volleyball was trying to become the first ever Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association team to win the Outrigger Invitational. However, the Flyers came up short in their attempt, falling to host Hawaii 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-12) on Sunday (Jan. 10) evening at the Stan Sheriff Center.
In the match, senior
Bobby Walsh (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) recorded two blocks to become Lewis' rally scoring era (2001-present) blocks leader with 442. He passes Alex Vigansky, who recorded 440 blocks from 2006-09. Walsh's total ranks second all-time in Lewis history. Victor Rivera (1996-99) holds the all-time mark with 567.
The loss gives Lewis a 2-1 record at the Outrigger Invitational after wins over Harvard and King earlier this weekend. It is Lewis' second consecutive 2-1 showing at the event after posting the same record in 2012.
The closest set was the second. Lewis scored four straight points to tie it at 21. Junior
Trevor Weiskircher (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Catholic) had a kill for point 21. The Warriors scored two straight to go up 23-21. The two clubs sided out from there to give the set to the Warriors.
Hawaii out-hit Lewis .395 to .221. The Warriors held a 9-1 edge in aces and 9-4 advantage in blocks.
Freshman
Julian Moses (Atlanta, Ga./Atlanta International School) and Walsh each had seven kills for Lewis.
Lewis falls to 3-1 while Hawaii stays undefeated at 3-0. Lewis is back on the court on Friday (Jan. 15) at home against Saint Francis (PA). First serve at Neil Carey Arena is set for 7 p.m.
