Mitch Perinar (Channahon, Ill./Minooka), No. 13 Lewis men's volleyball dropped a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association match to Grand Canyon 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-21) at Neil Carey Arena on Saturday (Jan. 30) evening.
It was the second consecutive contest between the two clubs as the Antelopes turned the tables on the Flyers after Lewis swept Grand Canyon on Friday.
The match featured 24 ties and nine lead changes.
The opening frame was a side out fest with the teams trading points for the majority of the game. Grand Canyon was the first team to put a run together of more than two points when they scored three straight to turn a 21-19 lead into a 24-19 advantage. The Lopes would win the set on a kill by Shalev Saada.
The second set was tied at 19 when Grand Canyon earned some breathing room with consecutive points. The Antelopes would ride that advantage to a 25-23 win in the frame.
Grand Canyon used four separate runs of three straight points in the third set to grab a quick 15-8 lead. Lewis would get within three at 24-21, but a kill by Saada put the match in the win column for the Antelopes.
The loss overshadowed the night Perinar put together. The freshman Flyer hit .594 with 20 kills and only one error while adding five digs.
Lewis was out-hit by Grand Canyon .471 to .351. The teams combined for only 19 hitting errors.
Saturday's loss was Lewis' first in three sets at home in a MIVA match since 2010.
Grand Canyon improves to 6-3 (1-1 MIVA). Lewis falls to 6-4 (1-1 MIVA). The Flyers hit the road next weekend for a pair of MIVA matches. First up is a date at Quincy on Friday (Feb. 5) in a 7 p.m. first serve at Pepsi Arena.
