HTML BoxHONOLULU, Hawaii – No. 8 Lewis men's volleyball rallied for a 3-2 (25-19, 22-25, 23-25, 25-14, 15-8) win over Harvard on Thursday (Jan. 7) during the first match of the 22
nd Annual Outrigger Invitational hosted by the University of Hawaii.
The Flyers out-hit the Crimson .224 to .100.
Harvard took a 2-1 lead thanks to key points in sets two and three. In the second, it was tied at 21, before Harvard finished the frame on a 4-1 run. Lewis rallied from a 22-19 deficit to grab a 23-22 advantage in the third set, only to see Harvard finish the set with three straight points.
The rest of the way, it was all Lewis. The Flyers scored multiple points in a row on eight occasions in the fourth. In the fifth, it was an 8-8 game when Lewis finished the match on a 7-0 run. Senior
Scott Fifer (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) had back-to-back aces in the push.
Freshman
Julian Moses (Atlanta, Ga./Atlanta International School) had 21 kills for his second consecutive match, to lead the Lewis offense. Freshman
Mitch Perinar (Channahon, Ill./Minooka) had 10 kills. Fifer dished out 47 assists while adding three aces and a kill.
The match featured 34 ties and 16 lead changes.
Senior
Bobby Walsh (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) totaled four blocks, to bring his career total to 440. He is now tied with Alex Vigansky's mark of 440 (2006-09) for most career blocks during the rally scoring era. The total ranks second all-time in Lewis history.
Harvard is 0-1. Lewis improves to 2-0. Lewis plays King on Friday during the second day of the Outrigger Invitational. Match time is set for 8 p.m. CT.
