Mitch Perinar (Channahon, Ill./Minooka) hit .448 with 18 kills and two aces in No. 14 Lewis men's volleyball's 25-16, 25-19, 25-23 victory over Quincy on Friday (March 18) in a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association match.
Perinar spread out his damage by recording six, seven and five kills in each set, respectively.
"Mitch was huge for us all night," Lewis head coach
Dan Friend said. "He went back and put some service pressure on them and the guys capitated on that."
The closest set was the third. It featured 12 ties and six lead changes. It was 21-20 in favor of Lewis when the Flyers seemed to take control with three straight points. Perinar had an ace and a kill to help put Lewis put 24-20. But Quincy didn't go quietly into the night. They scored three straight and forced a Lewis timeout. Out of the break, the Flyers went to senior
Bobby Walsh (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel). He pounded down his eighth kill of the match for the winner.
"It took us a couple points to finish," Friend said. "But ultimately we got a good pass and Bob put it away."
Freshman
Michael Simmons (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) recorded a match-high 12 digs.
The Flyers out-hit Quincy .256 to .159 but the difference came from the service line. Lewis had six aces while Quincy recorded zero.
The win was Friend's 300
th career men's volleyball coaching victory.
Quincy falls to 15-18 (3-8 MIVA). Lewis improves to 13-10 (7-5 MIVA). The Flyers continue MIVA play on Saturday (March 19) in a 7 p.m. first serve against Lindenwood at Neil Carey Arena.
